My Fall 2010 classes

I’m teaching in MGMT 6000 in Fall and Term 1 2010.

I am not teaching MGMT 6050 or IS 6100 this fall. See this page for an announcement.

  • MGMT 6000 Section C, Saturdays 1105-1400 downtown.
  • MGMT 6000 FlexTrack online and Camp Smith Wednesday evenings.
  • Downtown HPU students can register for the online section without attending the Camp Smith classes.

I’m using the same 8th edition Kreitner/Kinicki textbook (ISBN 978-0-07-338125-1) that is used in our other MGMT 6000 sections, and I will use the HBR cases sold through HPU’s bookstore and the MCP base offices.

Password security

I’m collecting some links, tips and videos about password security onto a single page.

The iPod revolution is not that complicated

Here’s an interesting infographic about Apple’s iPod. Note: there’s a reference list on the bottom of the graphic.

A good article to read along with this graphic is It’s Complicated: Making sense of complexity by David Segal.

Then again, the success of the iPod e-business model isn’t all that complicated.

Tearing down down the iPad

I sometimes describe Apple’s computers as an example of a closed system. Just cracking open the case of an iPod Touch or iPhone is enough to violate the warranty.

But some folks do this away. It’s called a teardown, and it’s a good way to generate a list of components used in a product. These lists can be used to estimate the actual assembly cost of a product, just as iSuppli.com has done for many Apple products, including the Apple iPhone 3GS. Estimating the total cost of a product can help analysts determine the product’s margin.

iFixit.com has been posting teardowns for several years. Some of these teardowns were done by iFixit.com staff, while others were done by regular users who contributed the photos and videos to the web site. The company sells parts and kits to help users repair or upgrade hardware from Apple, Nintendo and other manufacturers.

On Saturday morning, iFixit will have a few folks in line at some Apple Stores to buy a few of the first iPads. They’ll take the iPads to a room and tear them apart. This Reuters article called iPad striptease: It’s what’s inside that counts has more details.

This is a YouTube video of a teardown for the Apple Newton MessagePad 2000, an early model of a PDA.

Updated 15 April 2010: Here’s iFixit’s page with the iPad Teardown. There’s also an affiliated page about the iPad’s silicon – that’s the CPU and chipset.

The State of the Internet

Jesse Thomas produced this video for his talk at an AIGA Baltimore meeting on 24 February 2010 at Stevenson University.

For some more information and screencaps from the video, see this article at the JESS3 blog called about the State of The Internet by JESS3 for AIGA Baltimore

I’ve added a Twitter page

alohaism.com now has a Twitter page that lists all the tweets I’ve posted as @alohaism.

I’m using microblogging to post updates about grading, class meetings and assignments.

Students who have questions about their course grades or other issues should email me at wsodeman@hpu.edu

TurnItIn.com has changed its home page

It looks like the folks at TurnItIn.com have changed the layout and appearance of the home page. I imagine some faculty and students might be surprised, as there’s no announcement or explanation on the site, as far as I can tell.

Changes in the APA Publication Manual (6th edition)

I’m adding more content to this site’s web page regarding the APA Publication Manual. there were a lot of changes in the 6th edition, which was published in summer 2009.

The web page is at http://alohaism.com/apa/

I use a spiral-bound version of the APA manual. Unlike the version sold at the HPU bookstore, the spiral-bound version lays flat on a desk. It’s available at Amazon.com.

The reset button

It’s the last week of the semester here at HPU. After I finish grading the last assignments and calculating the final grades, I will take a few days to enjoy the festive winter holiday shopping season.

Then I will hit the reset button on this site and get ready for the Spring 2010 term.

There really isn’t a reset button, I’m sad to say.

What I’ll be doing is updating the names and links of all of the pages I posted for my Fall 2009 IS 6100, MGMT 6050 and IS 6700 courses. Many of these pages were password protected so Google and other search indexes would not index and cache my course content.

The students in my Fall 2009 courses will still have access to their course content through their alohaism.com accounts. Some of the URLs that I used this term, especially in the IS 6100 and MGMT 6050 courses, will change.

Nothing will change on turnitin.com. Student grades and papers will still be available there, under the usual password protection.

I’ll post some more information after I update the site.
